The Overflow Story

The Overflow Story

Who is Overflow Church?

Overflow is a church plant (started in 2007) that is centered on the life, message, and mission of Jesus Christ as found in the scriptures.

We are a Christ-centered community of people on a journey with Jesus and each other, located in the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph region. Overflow has a heart for God and for all people. We invite you to join us and be a part of the story that God is unfolding in and through a community that loves God, loves others, desires to passionately follow Jesus, and joyfully serve others.

How did Overflow church begin?

From Pastor Brian~
We felt God’s call to start Overflow Church in February of 2007. It was a clear call from Jeremiah 29:7 to, “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” We had never set foot in Benton Harbor or St. Joseph, but our hearts were broken over the very clear economic and racial divide in this region.  We knew without a doubt that God was leading us to stand in this gap because God is for all people. We shared our heart and passion with the Wesleyan denomination (www.wesleyan.org) and found out at that time they had been praying for a couple to come to this region for more than five years. As a result we began planting Overflow Church, as a part of the Wesleyan denomination, in the summer of 2007. With nothing more than our family of four (and our 2 babies under age 3) we transitioned to Benton Harbor/St. Joseph in faith and have been amazed at the story God has unfolded since. The first Bible study was held September 2007 with 6 people (which included Cindy and me) and our first outreaches began at Berrien Homes on Crystal Avenue in Benton Harbor. Worship Celebrations on Sunday mornings at Celebration Cinema in Benton Harbor began publicly March 16, 2008. We purchased, renovated and began worship as Overflow Church in our own building located at 300 East Napier Avenue, Benton Harbor on August 19, 2012.

Where did the name Overflow come from?

Many names were discussed between Pastor Brian and his wife Cindy in the spring of 2007, but none seemed to fit the unique call and vision God had given this new Christ-centered movement for the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph region. Pastor Brian went out for a jog and was spending time thinking and praying about who God is Scripturally and the role God played in his personal life as a Christ follower. It was during that run in April of 2007 that He sensed God whispering the name “Overflow Church” to him. After his run he shared the name with Cindy and it was instantly confirmed that this was to be the name of the church. We serve a God who, in every way Overflows boundaries and is constantly pouring into our lives so we can pour out!
